College is Expensive - Should You Go?

Monday, July 30th, 2007

By Perriann Rodriguez A College Degree is Expensive! Period. Even if you are looking at an in-state college or university and plan to live at home, the costs can be a little overwhelming. Just to give you a few examples from Top 10 colleges: Purdue University: In-state tuition as of 2006 is: $7,096 per year. A 4-year B.S. Degree at these rates would be: $28,384. For comparison purposes, we will not look at room/board numbers. Ohio State University: In-state tuition as of 2006 is: $8,667. A 4-year B.S. Degree at these rates would be: $34,668. Iowa State University: In-state tuition as of 2006 is $6,135. A 4-year B.S. Degree at these rates would be $24,540. Michigan State University: In-state tuition as of 2006 is $7,665. A 4-year B.S. Degree at these rates would be: $30,660 So, as you can see, when you start looking at total numbers it is very clear that college will cost you some money. You ask, is it really worth it? Absolutely is the answer. The U.S. Census Bureau released research from 2003 about the average starting salary for high school graduates, college graduates, masters and doctorate graduates. The average starting salary for a high school graduate was $21,948, while college graduates earned nearly twice as much at $40,287 and Master Degree graduates at $50,020. Doctorates and professional degrees earned the most at $64,372 and $75,322. And if that is not enough to convince you, the National Association of Colleges + Employment release their Spring 2006 Salary Survey results. The starting salaries for college graduates range from $30,000 for liberal arts majors to $56,500 for chemical engineering majors. If you were to take these numbers, assuming no increase in salary, you will be making almost double the amount of annual salary with a college bachelors degree than you would with only a high school degree. Common Morning Glory

Monday, July 30th, 2007

By Paul Wonning Ipomoea purpureaFamily - Convolvulaceae - Morning Glory Family The Morning Glory is an old fashioned favorite which should find a spot in most flower gardens. The flowers shimmer in the morning sun, almost luminescent with the morning light. Their twining tendrils twistaround any support to climb six feet or so above the flower garden. The generic name is of Greek origin, ips meaning wormlike, homoios, meaningsimilar to. The Morning Glory’s origin is sub-tropical America and it was introduced into European gardens in 1839. Flower colors for the Common Morning Glory range from blue, white, and pink. The flowers are two to three inches in diameter. It is a hardy annual, blooming from mid summer until autumn frosts nip it. Propagation of the Common Morning Glory is by seed. These are fairly large, almost one quarter inch in diameter. The seed coat is hard, and the seedscan be slow to germinate. Germination time can be quickened by carefully nickingthe seed coat with a file or awl. You may also soak the seeds in waterfor eight hours or so. The plants may also be rooted under mist. In the garden, the Common Morning Glory isn’t choosy about soil type, prefers full sun and warm weather. The soil should be kept moist, not soggy, for best plant performance. Plant the Common Morning Glory in your flower garden for a bit of old fashionedcharm. Its bright flowers shimmer in the morning sun, creating an almost magic luminescence in the early light. 2006Paul Wonning is the owner of Gardens and Nature.com a web site about gardening, hiking and other nature related topics. How to Lose Weight With Lemonade

Thursday, July 26th, 2007

By Kathy Burns-Millyard Have you heard rumors of a lemonade diet? Or maybe you’ve heard you can actually lose weight with lemonade? Hard as it might be for some to believe, it’s actually true. And there are a couple of ways it can be done… First let’s look at what’s known as the “Lemonade Diet”. This is actually just another type of juice fast diet. In other words, all you do is drink lemonade and water for several days. It’s not quite that simple but that is the gist of things. Lemons are extremely high in vitamins and nutrients, plus they help clean out your colon. So here’s the details of how this diet works: 1. Create real lemonade from the juice of lemons. If you try using bottled lemon juice - or worse: Instant powdered lemonade drink, you will not see any progress. The powdered stuff is usually just lemon flavored sugar water, and the bottled juice often has preservatives and other misc stuff included that’s not great for your body. So squeeze some real lemons, or use a juice machine. Either way, make sure you’re using fresh lemon juice. 2. Mix in organic maple syrup to taste. This is used for sweetener, but it also provides you with additional vitamins and minerals to help keep you healthy during your juice fast. It also helps keep your blood sugar from dropping too low. Since this is a form of sugar though, it should be used cautiously - especially by diabetics. Too much of any kind of sugar will prevent you from losing weight. 3. Mix in water to taste. Straight lemon juice by itself is way too tart for most of us, no matter how much syrup might be mixed in. It’s usually a good idea to use filtered or spring water here, to be sure you’re not feeding your body all the junk and pollutants that come from our taps. Create a new batch of this juice each day. Usually one gallon mixed at the beginning of the day is good, then you simply drink the juice all day long. You can have as many glasses of pure water as you’d like too. This diet has been maintained by some for multiple months with great success. A juice fast of any kind can be dangerous though, and I don’t recommend doing one for longer than one or two weeks - if you must. A better, and safer way to use Lemonade in your weight loss efforts, is to simply include it with your regular healthy meals. Lemonade - in fact any citrus - will help slow the digestion of carbs in your system. So having lemonade with your meal will effectively help reduce how fast your body reacts to the carbs in that meal. And by reducing how fast it reacts of course, you reduce the whole cycle of insulin spikes that cause the weight gain problems to begin with. You still need to make healthier choices with your meals of course though. Having a tall glass of lemonade with your chocolate cake is not likely to produce the weight loss progress you’d like. 2006, Kathy Burns-Millyard. Outdoor Gazebo - Enhancing Your Life

Wednesday, July 18th, 2007

By Dion Semeniuk Building on a screened in porch or adding a high quality awningto a deck or patio can be extremely expensive. Obviously, inaddition to something that will provide protection from rain, the sun, snow, and even bugs should be functional but you alsowant the porch or awning to enhance the appearance of your home. Unfortunately, cost usually means dreaming. However, anotherexcellent option that will provide functionality and a visuallypleasing appearance is the outdoor gazebo. The best thing about an outdoor gazebo is that whether choosingsomething permanent or temporary, prices are within mostbudgets. Just remember that choosing an outdoor gazebo is animportant decision. Therefore, prior to ordering, you want togo through a few steps to ensure you get exactly what you need. Many times, people will go all out, building a massive outdoorgazebo, only to have it sit empty the majority of the time. Therefore, you first need to consider the various reasons youwould use the gazebo, which will help you with design, style, and size. Second to the size of outdoor gazebo, you need to measure yourproperty so you can choose a size that will meet your needswithout overpowering your yard. One thing to remember is thatwhile the size of your yard will be a determining factor forsize, so is the uses of the gazebo. In other words, if you planbuilding a spa gazebo where family and friends can visit often, then losing part of your grass may not be a big deal. However,if the outdoor gazebo will be used only on special occasions, you might not be willing to give up a large portion of your yard. Another consideration for your outdoor gazebo is the appearance. Typically, you want to choose a style that will complement yourhome. In fact, if you assemble a permanent gazebo, if you wereever to sell your home, chances are you will secure a higherasking price, meaning the gazebo adds value. Keep in mind thatwhen it comes to appearance, different people want differentthings. In this case, it might be that you want the outdoorgazebo to be the showcase of your backyard. On the other hand, you may want a gazebo that appears to blend in with thelandscape, tucked away for privacy. Then, it is important that as you identify various locations foryour new gazebo, especially if you are choosing a permanentstructure, that you consider all the seasons. For instance, while your outdoor gazebo may look beautiful underneath largeoak or maple trees, come fall time, you will have an abundanceof leaves to clean up. Additionally, while you might love alocation on high ground, remember that any high winds could comethrough and cause serious damage. Therefore, try your best tochoose a spot on your property where the gazebo could be enjoyedto the fullest any time of year. To make sure the spot chosen will actually work, we recommendyou place some stakes at the corners of where the outdoor gazebowould sit. With that, you can look at the extending area to seeif any trees or brush would need to be removed, new dirtybrought in to level the ground off, and so on. Having thisvisual may confirm the location or prompt you to change it. Even when you believe that the ideal location has been found, itis imperative that you check out zoning requirements. Althoughzoning is different from city to city, typically, an outdoorgazebo of 100 square feet or less would not need a permit butyou do want to check. Dion Semeniuk has developed experience into transforming your backyard into your very own resort. To learn how the gazebo can achieve this, visit the Gazebo website. Small Business Marketing Tall Tale #1: Advertising Sells Products

Monday, July 16th, 2007

By Jimmy Vee Advertising. We’ve all tried it at least once. For the purposes of this discussion, let’s define advertising as any form of marketing one pays for. From business cards, flyers, and mailers to billboards, TV spots, and newspaper display ads, advertising is everywhere. Still, almost every business in the world can benefit from advertising somehow. Most people mistakenly believe that advertising is some sort of magic bullet. That may have been true in the past. But today, advertising incorrectly, inefficiently, or inappropriately will not only fail, it can kill your business. The problem with advertising lies in its traditional placement in the marketing cycle. Advertising usually occurs after a product or service has been conceived, designed, implemented, and even consumed and then only when sales aren’t as expected. Take Two Ads and Call Me in the Morning Advertising is generally used as a surface treatmenta marketing salve. Your product won’t sell itself? Nobody’s using your service? Just do a little advertising and things should turn around! Not likely. For the last 50 years, this has been the primary approach of advertisers and agencies alike. For many years it worked. But now, traditional advertising media like radio and TV and newspapers are dying a slow death. In 1960, it was possible to reach 90% of housewives in one week by placing ads on the 3 TV networks. In 1994 the average household had less than 30 TV channels. Today, the average home enjoys more than 100. Newspaper readership is down, satellite radio technology is creeping in, the Internet has become the primary information resource for many Americans, and there are more niche magazines than ever. Market segmentation is occurring at an historical rate, just as the number of marketing messages we see each day is. According to market positioning expert Jack Trout, the average American is exposed to 4,000 marketing messages per day. Sergio Zyman, former Chief Marketing Officer of Coca Cola wrote, Everybody has a thousand choices for any product they might want to buy, and there are a million different products competing for their wallets. So marketers increasingly need to find ways to speak to customers individually, or in smaller and smaller groups. Old-style, one-size-fits-all mass marketing can’t do this. So, it’s harder than ever to reach a mass audience and the impact of a single advertising message is decreasing as the number of marketing interruptions per day increases. That doesn’t paint a happy picture for the future of advertising. Or does it? One Word Changes the Entire World There is one word that fundamentally changes what advertising is and what its function in business is. We were first inspired to this way of thinking by marketing guru Seth Godin, and his book “Purple Cow,” which we highly recommend you read. This word is so important because it at once tells us what needs to change in marketing while at the same time tells us what marketing can do for us. Scendsational. (Yes, we changed the spelling a bit for a shameless play on the name of our company, but thats what we do. Whatever you do, don’t stop reading here. This may not mean what you think it does.) That’s it. In a nutshell, a company must be scendsational if it wants to find long-term success through marketing. We define scendsational as seven distinct qualities a business (and the people who make it up) must aspire to embody. To be scendsational, we must be 1) fun, 2) unique, 3) interested, 4) a risk-taker, 5) visible, 6) credible, and 7) spreadable. If a company is not scendsational, its invisible no matter how much advertising it does. There is too much clutter and too little attention to hope that me too advertising stratagem or messages will gain any traction in the marketplace. Put the Sauce on top of the Cheese As we said earlier, advertising has traditionally been a post-development process applied last. But the most extraordinary advertising in the world, from Madison Avenue’s most famous advertising agencies, will struggle for results if the product, service, or company is not somehow scendsational. In today’s media frenzy, that ad will hardly be noticed. What’s required of companies who need to increase sales and experience new growth is not a surface treatment of a “magic ad ointment.” They must inject the creative, strategic, and critical thinking of advertising into their design, story, development, implementation, experience, and service. By moving the primary stages of advertising up in the marketing cycle and becoming scendsational, the task of post development marketing will be much easier. Spreading the word about a scendsational company is much more efficient than trying to convince the world that an average product is more than it actually is. What’s even better, by rearranging the marketing cycle in this way, the cost of marketing can vastly decrease. The Sound of One Hand Clapping So, the truth is, advertising does not sell products or services. Scendsational companies with scendsational ideas that offer scendsational experiences to their customers sell products and services. Advertising is merely a vehicle through which these scendsationall concepts can be spread throughout a population. Take away the scendsational qualities and that advertising may as well be a mighty oak falling in a hidden forest. Nobodys gonna hear it and nobodys gonna care.
